If defendants cannot call witnesses, then they have almost no way to rebut a case. You would hear one side of the story - the prosecution's - and pretty much no others.

Think about it in the simplest terms - is someone can absolutely prove they did not commit a crime through evidence and testimony, how can they possibly introduce any of that evidence? You have to call witnesses who can assert that they collected the evidence properly or that they saw you not do it (or someone else do it)!

too find out if they were also involved in the crime with the accuse.
