There are Drilling reservists who work on weekends

then there are Techs who are Civilian employees of the state who are also drilling reservists. They wear there uniforms to work but they are paid as civilians during the week by the state government (it has to do with where the money comes from)

the last group are AGR for Active Guard and Reserve. These are Full time Soldiers for the Guard or Reserve. They have all the same pay and benefits of the Regular army but they are always at guard units.

There are two types of "full timers" in the guard. There are those who are employed on the civilian side but still wear a uniform to work. Then there are active duty guard who are like active duty military but still have to drill as well.

Bottom line is national guard soldiers will probably spend time in the sandbox together with other components of the Army. You may drill a few weekends but you may get deployed.
