What physically makes a digital watch chime and is there anyway of removing the mechanism?

There is a little speaker on the back plate of the watch...

Just tape over where the leads go and you break the circuit...No more chime or alarm...

If you just want to remove the hourly chime...look at the user's manual

There is always a way to disable the hourly alert. If you don't have the directions, just start pressing buttons until you come up with the magic combination. If you know one button to be your "function" button, start with that one. Keep messing with it until you make the little musical note picture go away.
