$3000 is a lot of money! I'm not being sarcastic, I have no concept of how much my husband paid for mine. I know it was more than $3000 including my wedding band.
You should really do some research about the quality of a diamond before you buy a ring. If you get a GREAT quality diamond, at the amount you are willing to spend, you should get a single diamond on a band, get it custom made, instead of having little tiny diamonds on the band, have bows/decorated edges/antique design on the band.
Go to www.mjchristensen.com
The REALLY cheap way and getting more for your money...
Go on ebay ...or you COULD go to Walmart/Target/Sears/Macy's, and see what they got and get the most biggest and decorated ring you can. I bet you would get a matching wedding band to go with the engagement ring and one wedding band for you.
If you really want to save that way.
Don't feel bad if people say you're cheap. They either have no concept of how expensive engagement rings are, they're not married and probably very superficial. Your soon-to-be-fiancee knows you and would appreciate spending the rest of her life with you more than what her ring looks like. BUT PAY ATTENTION TO QUALITY ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE.

My dad owns a jewelry store, so of course, before I was engaged I had my ring picked out and everything. But that's just me. White gold is very popular, however, yellow gold is making a come back. Princess cut is very very nice. However, I would suggest also asking when you go to the jewelry store if they have round diamonds set in a square setting. It looks very much like princess cut, and it makes the diamond look bigger, which is always a good thing. It's called an illusion setting. That's what I have, It is very very pretty. I have 1/3 of a carat. That's a nice sized diamond. You are supposed to spend one month's salary on the ring, so whatever you make in one month is how much your ring should cost. I have been hearing that it's 3 months now, but that's pretty spendy. I would say that getting 1/2 carat or less is very acceptable, and that's a pretty good sized diamond. For the engagement ring, I would suggest just a princess cut solitare diamond on white or yellow gold (it's up to you!), if you can find a round cut in an illusion setting, that would be pretty, but I don't know if they make that on newer rings anymore. You could also get the princess cut setting, and they can place four square-shaped diamonds in the setting to make it look like there is just one big diamond in there. It's a little bit cheaper to do it that way, and it looks very pretty. You can also buy the wedding band at the same time, actually, they usually come in sets unless you just want to buy the engagement ring at the same time. I don't believe it saves you a whole lot of money buying the entire set though. Make sure the diamonds are SI or VS 2 (or better) quality. SI at the very least. That way the diamond is clear and very little inclusions.

Great deals??? Jebus, boy! You don't need to spend 3k on a good engagement ring! Wow. If she's not helping you pick it out, just go for the simple solitaire diamond. Find out if she likes gold or silver better so you can decide between gold and white gold. And go to a large store because they'll have lots of options and lower prices. You can get a nice 1/3 carat diamond for like $800. And yes, it's big enough. But I guess that all depends on her style. But let me just say that...the size of the diamond should not reflect how much you love her. That's not what an engagement ring is about.

Check out www.abazias.com. They have a good selection and an education section that will tell you what everything means. They will also ship it to a jeweler for you to look at (and for the jeweler to look at) before you decide to buy it. One thing that people always forget to look at when it comes to diamonds is the cut of the stone. If it is cut right, the light will shine brillantly and make it appear as if it is a better color and clarity. I am not talking about the shape of the stone. I am talking about the actual angles that are cut into it.
Also, please consider that the cheaper the ring, the cheaper the prongs or setting that holds the stone in place. You want to make sure that they are of good quality so that the stone doesn't fall out.
This is the place that is designing my ring- www.rockharddesigns.com. The owner is great and can answer any questions you have. He is the one that supplies most of the diamonds for the jewelry stores at the local mall.

That's great you've got the bank roll to spend..
I would suggest YOU pick whats pleasing to your eyes. U r the one that is going to b looking at the ring every day of your married life. This ring will also b passed down through generations. Platinum settings is perfect 4 this.
I would suggest BUY NOW b-4 the holidays when prices naturally go sky high. Or buy in late January when stores r getting rid of unsold/cancelled orders...
Keep away from the older male/female salespersons 45-60ish they r "seasoned" pros & this is the time of the year they make their highest commisions. They r not looking out for the best deal for u only their commision sales.
Choose the younger novice, their inexperience can b to your advantage...they r trying to develop a clientel so they will give u more "honest" deal. Or choose the seasonal 30-40 year old housewife type. She's usually working for the extra cash or discount for her own jewelry...will check on deals for you more readily, she's just trying to get through the work day. This type of salesperson will tell u if more items r coming in, she will usually show u everything in store..this is the best type of saleswoman.
Good Luck & happy engagement!!

I would not go to websites, go to the jewler. My fiancee bought me a gourgous ring and it was about 3k. That is the price for a really nice ring. Mine was a signture dimond and has very few flaws, we got ours at Gordens Jewler, I don't know what state you live in, but look around when you see the ring you will know instantly that is the one for your girl...GOOD LUCK

My advice is to propose without the ring and let her pick one out. That way she's guaranteed to get one she likes.
That's what I did and my wife got the perfect ring. We actually had a local jeweler customize it. It ended up costing me $745. I was looking to spend up to $2000 so we really lucked out.
