more info: is this for an anniversary? birthday?
if it's for an anniversary, i recommend just saving your money and not buying anything. save the good stuff for annual anniversaries.
For a birthday, perhaps you could cook him a nice dinner.
In the past, I just get my exes cards and say things that I like about them, cook them dinner, take them somewhere that I hold dear (like a really good restaurant), etc. or i'd take them to a place with a really nice/romantic sunset. etc.

a certificate to a theatre or show with some chocolates or carmels! Tools would usually turn a male off they might make him think you just want him to be your handy man and not really care about him!

This works for anytime. Get him a goldfish and say out of all the fish in the see i chose you! :) sure to make him laugh. Or cook him a nice dinner.
