Do you equate the homeless with a mental illness or another problem along this line? I suppose some are,and some others like drinking way too much. Let"s not over look the drug problem lots of people have causing this homelessness. What about the people who have lost their jobs from perhaps closures -- lay-offs -- downsizing -- fired -- or quit ? There are other reasons besides these too. I don"t have a good answer because there are more than one reason why people become homeless -- including a divorce.

We can choose to treat the homeless with respect. Homeless individuals in larger cities may include the working poor, so one meaningful way to prevent homelessness is to support reasonable working conditions. Others may not be able to provide suitable housing for their needs. Supporting community mental health and addictions agencies can also help to prevent homelessness. . Organizations that provide hot meals, such as "Out of the Cold", are other good choices.

By not necessarily starting up homeless shelters but having programs in the communities to help these people. Alot of the homeless either have mental issues or drug and alcohol issues and they have to wait for months to get into programs to help them and by then the people don't want help. Also job training...people either drop out of high school and work at McDonalds and no offence but working there isn't going to support a family but if they had good job training they could get into a good company where they could work up into a nice job.

We can't "stop" homelessness any more than we can stop poverty. You can help, though, by donating time and/or money to your local or national agency that works to help homeless people. Also, and especially with elections coming up, support politicians and issues which promote social justice. Lastly, treat ALL people, including homeless and other poor people, with respect.

Better mental health. A lot of homeless people are people released from mental institutions during the Reagan era who are not equipped to take care of themselves, so they live on the streets.

Programs and shelters would be a start. Some are homeless because they lost jobs, or because of mental illness, alcohol or drug addiction. Some because they have chosen that life style.

give a man a fish, feed him for a day. teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. we need to take whatever opportunities we are presented with to give homeless people more employment opportunities. no one buys a home on cash, it's all on credit. and the only way to get that credit-based loan is with a job.
