i'm sick of people acting like if there had never been any religion the planet would would be busy right now deciding who gets to eat the most ice cream instead of fighting in wars. I frankly think we would just fight over something else.

Even with the existance of religions , people started to fight one another. It will surely become worst if there is no religion just like a road junction without traffic lights. No rules or regulations as to what is wrong or right. Human will do whatever they feel like.

Thats so funny... my friend (agnostic) is reading this book that basically says that. In a nutshell the author tries to explain to believers that they should look over the horrors of the ages and admit their beliefs failed and if no one believed in God, the world would be a much better place. But, as much as many people want to think that, the fact would STILL be, there is an &$#^%^ born every minute and it would come down to the biggest A&O$&D wins. Hate and violence has never been restricted to the religious. Religion however is something many have held on to. I am very religious and I know it wont ever cause me to be violent. it's just nasty people want to keep their nastiness and will use any method they can to justify it.

Well, we have historically fought for ideas, food supplies, water, land, ores, minerals, politics, women, men, sex, power, and just for the hell of it. Probably every conceivable little thing people ever argue about has caused a fight to the death somewhere, sometime.

It's much harder to use reason to govern than it is to use violence; people are violent by nature. Religions dispense with reason, give their followers excuses to indulge their violent natures, and make them think they're righteous when they're killing people. So religions tend to kill on a much grander scale.

I don't think the world would be violence-free if there were no religions, far from it. But I do think we humans would have evolved much further, and would now be much closer to a violence-free world with logic and reason as our guides, rather than fictitious deities, ignorance, and persecution.

Of course we'd still kill each other -- it's in our nature. There might have possibly been a bit less killing, since there have been quite a few wars where one of the primary causes was religion...
But we humans are still greedy, selfish, scared, nasty animals that would kill each other for land, food, oil, other natural resources, etc.
That religion has done absolutely NOTHING to curb man's tendencies towards war and evil don't say much for its effectiveness as a life philosophy, does it? :(

of coarse. it is just that it is the main cause. if there was no religion wars would be over food, land, resources. it is just that man uses god and justification. Men say it is Gods will and gets more people involved.
I think there still would be war but maybe not as many people would follow

The religious war thing has been blown way out of proportion most waring countries today are governments and they fight over land and oil...it really isn't the crusades anymore.

Of course, "religious wars" are still all about the basic vices - selfishness, desire for money, power, land, racism etc. Those things would exist with or without religion

Truth there...No war is fought over ideals, it's all about power, money, resources...the ideals are what the old men tell the young men why they want them to die...If it wasn't religion, it would be patriotism, nationalism, they'd think up something to con them with.

We already have, it's called atheism, or the lack of religion. In some country's that will get you killed as quickly as believing in the wrong god.

Applying your theory to animals in the jungle it would be appropriate they kill each other to survive and this is good prove of the non-comprehensive theory of smart design.
