Why have the USA and Canada become a diverse society?

Our countries had a fantastic idea years ago to become multi-cultural societies. Does multi-culturalism work? I don't know. In fact, I don't think so. But this is debatable and irrelevant.
Anyhow, there were plenty of economic and political reasons for being so diverse... I'm sure there have been numerous essays and books written about this subject.

Its called vote buying. Give the country away to newcomers in exchange for their votes.
