Any type of heat and chemicals is damaging to your hair, however daily brushing and combing is damaging itself. Moisturize and keep your hair trimmed as needed. Make sure you drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily.

They do damage your hair. But ceramic straighteners actually seal the cuticles of your hair making it shiny and smooth. They don't snag on your hair either. Also, using a heat protection spray helps protect your hair from the heat damage. If you tied your hair after straightening your hair then that might be the reason you have the bump. If your hair is heated then it's easier to style so the hair tie [or whatever you use] kind of acts like a styling tool and leaves the bump.

Hair straighteners use incredibly high levels of heat and will, over time, damage your hair. No question about it.
I wear my hair straight 3-4 times per week - but it's healthy and shiny (no lie, my hair stylist says it looks healthy!). I use products w/ protectant in it like Heat Glide or Butter Treat (Redken). I usually wash my hair at night and put Heat Glide through out my hair and then put Butter Treat on the ends. When I wake up in the morning I straighten my hair with the iron and rewet my bangs and hit them w/ the blow dryer and round brush.
If you start w/ wet hair and blow dry then use the iron, you REALLY need to use a good heat protectant.
I also use a deep conditioning treatment once or twice per week while in the shower.

Of course. Hair straightener and hair curler (eg home permanent solutions) both do the same thing. They soften the hair and allow you to alter it from its natural shape. People with curly hair want straight hair, people with straight hair want curly hair. Aren't we silly about all this?
Anyway, once the hair has been softened and re-arranged to please us, another solution is poured on it to make it harden in that shape. But the chemicals used for both softening and hardening are harsh, and yes, they will damage your hair. That's why you have to use special conditioners if you have chemically treated hair -- either dyed, straightened or curled -- because the hair has been damaged in the process.

YES YES YES it will so will curling irons, any heating appliances, coloring, i fell for it just don't do it everyday and use a heating protection product like turn up the heat by beyond the zone or any other you can find in the nearest walmart or drugstore... don't fall for that beautiful look, trust me you don't want to see what can happen later, it gets pretty ugly ( unless your hair is so perfect it can handle anything like my mom's XD )

does an iron damage a shirt? if you continually use a hair straightener yes it will eventually start to damage your hair.
Start by using a heat treating creme or mousse to reduce the breakage and frying of your hair.
