President Theodore Roosevelt once said, "We have one language here, and that is the English language, and we intend to see that the [assimilation] crucible turns our people out as Americans."
This multilingualism is causing a growing underclass, which is segregated and walled off into linguistic ghettos. A century ago such immigrant ghettos were marked by extreme poverty, 80-hour workweeks and child labor. As the industrial revolution matured, immigrants discovered that language skills were the key to entering the emerging "middle class." This, coupled with mandatory public education and reduced immigration, resulted in the successful assimilation of ethnic communities into American society.
But today, in segregated classrooms, so-called "bilingual education" keeps immigrant children from learning English, by teaching them in foreign languages. And millions of people cannot find good-paying jobs, because they lack the ability to speak English with customers, co-workers or employers.
Official English doesn't mean "English only." Having English as our official language simply means that for the government to act officially, it must communicate in English. It means the language of record is the English language, and that no one has a right to demand government services in any other language.

There should not be a mandatory language. We do need to have an official language and that will be English. No one should be forced to speak English but by that same token, the USA should not have to provide the none English speaker with teachers, printed material etc in their home language.Only in English. We English speakers being the majority want our rights respected also.

Listen my friend do you think it is any more fair that my kids are forced to learn Spanish because my town is filled with illegals who refuse to learn English what about my rights being respected.Oh I get it only minority's have the right to complain about this kind of stuff well I've got news for you white people are the minority here and it is us who are discriminated against by the majority Hispanics we are called racist for any display of white pride and note I did not say anything about white people being superior I don't believe that but I do believe my children and I have the right to display our pride in our heritage without being called racist.I would also like to say that we do not call all of the other people in our society racist for displaying pride in their heritage I see no problem with brown pride, black pride, white pride etc.....people should be proud of who and what they are it makes our country stronger ! RESPECT AND LOVE EACH OTHER PEOPLE. Well thank you teacher megD22 for your concern about proper grammar given the fact that my editor did not proof read this I'm not surprised that you find errors but with all do respect teacher megD22 this is just yahoo Q&A not an article in the New York Times.

Communist don't have anything to do with language, This is America an English speaking country, daaaaaaaaaaaaaaam! yes we defend their right to be stupid, and defend their right not to learn the language of the country they live in, which is English. We defend their right not to get ahead in life because they can't speak English. We defend their right to be ignorant. How is that. If we do it your way every one will need interrupters. If a Mexican man goes into a store and the person behind the register dose not speak English or Spanish, he speaks Swedish how will they communicate. One Nation one language. get over it. Not worried about Mexicans taking my job, I am just sick of seeing them destroy our country, I am sick of the standing on street corners, I am sick of their marches, I am sick of them trashing our environment in the desert. I am sick of the disregarding our laws, I am sick of them destroying our small southern towns. I am just plain sick of them enough is enough. Deport all illegals.

This is a free country all right, but... that doesn't mean forget English & make Spanish our national language. Our children deserve to be taught in English... Not Spanish translated into English do to overpopulation of Hispanic children in our public school system. It is fine to speak your language as long as you know the English language as well. Why is that so hard to understand. English is the national language. We Americans should not have to press #1 for help in English.

Yes, English is the national language. How to you interact with your boss if you can't understand them. How likely is it that an employer will hire someone who isn't able to understand what that employer wants them to do. If you don't understand what to do it makes you under-qualified.
How do you send a non-English speaking child to a school where the teachers don't speak their language. How does the child learn.
Common sense really.
When in Rome speak like the Romans.
When in America speak like the Americans.

Speaking a particular language is not a right guaranteed by the Constitution. Thus, I can agree with you about people's rights being respected and disagree with you about the need for English to be a national language, which I believe should happen.

People who go to another country should learn the countries language. They should WANT to learn the language of their new country so they can thrive. There is nothing against keeping their own culture.
