other than the obvious 'don't do it', I am looking for constructive advice on what to do now. this will never happen again, so...
she was cooperative with the police and they let her go after the accident (her car was totaled). No one else was hurt.

First thing is to not let her auot insurance lapse. Getting coverage again will be difficult. Second check with the prosecuting attorney in the jurisdiction this happened in. Often if first time offenders go to class/rehab they will get the charge cleared from their record upon the completion of probabtion.

If your friend was not arrested, booked, or ticketed for Driving Under the Influence, there will be no legal consequences for her actions. In the event your friend was arrested, booked, or ticketed for a DUI, she will have been, or will be, issued a court date to address the charge.

Your friend would be prudent to contact an attorney who will be able to ascertain if any written documentation was filed with city, county, or state agencies that might negatively impact her driving record.

Others involved in the accident may, regardless of whether a DUI was filed by local or state police officials, still pursue legal and financial suits against your friend. Depositions will be taken from persons involved in the accident, each person's insurance company will take a stand, and financial responsibility will either be mutually agreed upon by the insurance companies or the case will go to court for judgment. This process could be over in months, or could take years.

She is going to need a lawyer, there are maximum penalties for this mishap and without a lawyer she will not be able to work the penalties down.

Chances are she will lose her license for 6mos or more, will have numerous fines and may have to go to some sort of substance abuse class.

Get ready to shell out a good amount of money and catch the bus for awhile.

Good luck to your friend

On a different note to all of you her are bombarding this person with negativity because they are trying to help their friend you should all take a look at yourself. Unless you have never had a drink at a wedding, BBQ, holiday party etc and sat behind the wheel of an automobile then you have absolutely no room to talk.

It can happen to any one of us, excuse me if myself and this person are the only ones who aren't a saint.

Just because they let her go means nothing. She will have to face the judge soon. She may as well get a lawyer (though I personally hope the judge throws the book at her) to get some legal advice and possibly make a plea to try to avoid community service, heavy fines and suspension of her license for years.
What would she be saying if she killed someone? Doesn't make a rats-@ss if she vows to never do it again...you can't undo it once it's done.
