in responce to the proposed green taxes i think it woul make much more sence to tax the rest of europe instead. even by making sure that everyone pays the same price for petrol in eu would make a difference! why are we the only country to pay high road tax, and petrol prices and why is itr that we are looking to have to pay more to use the roads!

ok in respose to cheekbones comment..so the tax thing is not to preserve the enviroment then... its mearly to find another way of extracting money from the public. my point is that... if the reasoning behind it is the enviroment then why not do something about the other countries in eurpoe that are causing alot more pollution than uk? ps...roads in spain, france and germany all seem to be ok.. and they do not have to pay such a price on petrol as we do!

As usual the EU makes the laws and we in Britain follow them to the letter of the law................. and pay heavily for it. The rest of Europe only follow the laws they want to............... our Government don't mind following this law as it brings in lots of money, I think the fact that its right or wrong for the population doesn't come into their heads............. its just the money they want............. and to hell with us!

We may charge motorists a lot (a lot of the tax on petrol is because of the "conveyor" that introduced automatic increases each year sometime in the 90s), but many European countries have much higher tax rates to pay for excellent public services for example.

I get the impression that people in this country often forget that you get what you pay for - if you want low tax, then the only services that you get are either going to be rubbish state ones, or highly-priced private ones.

This is because each member state set their own taxes. Our government in their wisdom see fit to charge enormous tax on road fuel, the tax goes to our government, not to the E.C.C.
