Many people inaccurately define speaking in tongues as "speaking gibberish" or "talking nonsense." The truth is, speaking in tongues is the most intelligent, perfect language in the universe. It is God's language.
The Apostle Paul writes, "He who speaks in tongues edifies himself...I would like every one of you to speak in tongues" (1 Corinthians 14:4,5). With these positive statement about tongues, why do so few Christians speak in tongues? I believe the answer is because there is very little sound, logical and scriptural teaching as to the scope and value of speaking in tongues. where does tongues come from? It comes from Heaven! Tongues is the heavenly language. It is what is spoken in heaven; the only difference is that the people in heaven understand what they are saying. Here on earth Paul says, "For anyone who speaks in tongues does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understand him; he utters mysteries with his spirit" (v. 2).
Jesus says that those who believe in Him will "speak in new tongues" (Mark 16:17)
The first to speak in tongues were the disciples. This occurred on the day of Pentecost. People often think that on this day the disciples were speaking human languages, because the people could understand what they were saying.I don't believe this is true because there was a two-fold miracle taking place on this day: the miracle of speaking and hearing: The first miracle was the speaking in tongues. The second miracle was the enabling of some to understand the tongues. Not everyone understood the tongues, because some onlookers made fun of the disciples and accused them of being drunk (Acts 2:13); this clearly shows that they did not understand the tongues.
It is clear that the disciples were not "preaching" the gospel in tongues, they were instead "declaring the wonders of God" (v. 11). They were not speaking "to men but to God" (1 Cor 14:2). The people were simply listening in on their praises to God. It wasn't until Peter stood up to speak to the crowd in one common language that the gospel was preached. So tongues are not supernatural human languages given to the apostles so they could preach in languages they did not naturally learn. The disciples were not speaking human languages; they were speaking in unknown tongues. But God enabled those whose hearts were opened to understand what the disciples were saying. Sometimes this happens today. You see, the miracle was in the hearing of the people.
I would say if you want to know more then read the Bible it is a great place to learn these things.

There are gifts which are given to Christians by God! At Pentecost - the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and they started to speak in many languages (which they had never been able to speak before) so the people who were listening could understand then - see Acts 2!
Some Christians are given gifts of speaking in tongues - basically it's speaking in a language you have never spoken before (and may not speak again!)

It is supernaturally generated language, and usually the meaning is known only to God. Sometimes there is a interpretation that is given , if God wants others to know its meaning. Many times, the language is used by God to protect the prayer, so that the enemy, Satan, cannot understand it meaning, and work against it.
The language cannot be learned or imitated. It can only come through the action of the Holy Spirit on the person, who is just a willing vessel for the language.

Max, if you are British the nearest thing to speaking in tongues would be Bill and Ben the flowerpot men, talking rapidly. It is a psychosomatic spectacle related to mental delusion, another primitive display of superstition. Do not become involved!

Speaking in toungues is a special prayer language, a gift given by the holy spirit to christian believers. Those who speak in tongues will have no idea what they are saying, but god knows and in fact it will be his words spoken in spirit, as we don't always know what to pray for, so the spirit steps in and prays for us. It's a powerful way to pray, things start to happen the more you do it.

Well people refer to it in two different ways.
1) Where people suddenly start speaking in a unknown language (kind of sounds like babbling).
2) Where people either learn quickly or suddenly are able to speak a known language where someone else is there who can understand it.
I'm inclined to think that #2 is what God had in mind.

Speaking in tounges is awesome. the Holy Spirit, the third person in the Trinity, wants to live in you. when He comes and lives inside one of the gifts He brings is the gift of other languages, somtimes these languages are human and others are heavenly. It is litterally the Holy Spirit praying through you. He also brings other gifts. AWESOME!!
