Frankly I think your best bet would be to take it to a Nissan Dealer, have them plug in their CONSULT tool and tell you what's wrong and go about fixing it.

More often than not, smog failures on 240s are due to holy vacuum lines (due to age), clogged EGR/BPT valves, and sometimes a bad catalytic converter.

It's best to tune up the car beforehand to insure it's running as it should before paying to replace or repair any of these problems.
This involves changing air filter, oil and filter change, spark plug change, and timing set.

A 'seafoam' treatment usually helps if excessive carbon is clogging up ports within the intake manifold.

Good luck getting your 240 past smog.

1992 is obd 1, You can try disconnecting your battery for about 5 minutes. That will usually turn out the light. Don't go for a smog check with it on they will probably rip you off.

Scroll down to 12 pin connector and follow the directions. This is gm but it should work the same for nissan.

Autozone has the hand-held computers that they can use to pull your code. I'm pretty sure they have one for OBD 1 and OBD 2. They do it free, so if there is an auto zone near you, bring it up there and have them check it out, it will tell you exactly why the light is on.

You should take it to a mechanic that can do diagnostic checks on your car. They can tell you what your light is on for. I have seen the light come on for things as small as your gas cap is loose, to oxygen sensors, and crankshaft position sensors. A lot of these codes are for emission related problems. Just don't take it to some car part outlet store, they have crappy scanners.
