If the doors and frames have been previously painted then you do not need to use a primer (undercoat). Use 180 grit sandpaper to make a dulled appearance ,wipe off dust with a tack cloth, wipe surface again with lint free rag dampened with water. Let dry , then apply 2 top coats of the paint you are using (use a semi gloss). If the doors and frames are bare than you should use two primer coats followed with two top coats.

Use an undercoat for wood and metal, then top it with a gloss for wood and metal, you can get them in Homebase or B&Q. One coat of undercoat, 2 coats of gloss, sanded back between coats should do it. By getting paint for both wood and metal it saves having variation in shade on the end result as you can use the same paint for both.
