I have a recipe that calls for 1 can of pumpkin. I'd like to try to use real pumpkin. Does anyone know what I need to do, in order to get the correct amount and consistency?

yes you have to cook the pumkin first and then after it is cooked you will need 29 ozs for a can of pumpkin or even easier use a can an measure it...a whole pumpkin makes a lot of cans ...so cook your pumpkin flesh down with a little water until it is done all the way and it can be mashed up ...you want it about like thin mashed potatoes....to use for your dish....good luck....i usely baked mine in a low oven and then i process it ..it just seems to give a better roasted flavor but you can cook it down...

In my late teens I wanted to cook a pumpkin and make some pies. I followed the recipe to cook pumpkin and no matter how long I cooked it it still remained 'stringy'. It was a MESS. I mashed until it became similar to the canned consistency. Used the spices needed and put into a pie shell and baked the recommended time. I was very disappointed with the end result.

Canned pumpkin has more flavor. If you still want to try cooking the pumpkin yourself, give it a try but it is a lot of work and you may be disappointed also.

They mean the little can of pumpkin. Probably about 1 3/4 cup, if I had to guess.

Be sure you stew your homemade punkin down to a thick paste, or the recipe wont' work.
