If North Carolina is a state that accepts National Registry results, then it only takes a semester or so to get your EMT-Basic certification. If you are willing to volunteer for a year or so, a lot of volunteer fire departments will train you to be an EMT-Basic for free.
If North Carolina does not accept National Registry results (a few states have their own EMT testing and don't use the national testing), then the requirements will depend on that individual state. Most EMT-Basic type course don't take longer than a semester or so.
Here is the website for North Carolina Department of EMS: http://facility-services.state.nc.us/EMS/ems.htm
Hope this helps!

I would contact the fire station in the county where you are moving to and ask about what they recommend you do. I know where I live in CA we dont have volunteer fire stations. We have a privatly owned ambulance company that helps their employees get certified as EMT's and Paramedics but Im not sure about the volunteer squads. But they will be able to give you the names of schools or classes near you. My sister was an EMT in CA for 2 years than went on to get her paramedic license and is working in OK now. She loves what she does. Good luck and Take Care

I went in the process the EMT after which EMT-I in one semester each and each. The EMT-B (emergency medical tech easy) is a paramedic-like classification with very easy and known point expertise. The EMT easy is barely allowed do easy lifestyles help and to manage activated charcoal, Aspirin, and Glucose, and in some places epinephrine for anaphylaxis (intense allergic reaction). EMT-I, is a paramedic, yet with the curriculum from 1985 (do no longer inquire from me why). The i stands for intermediate, and that they might provide IV drugs, decompress a sucking chest wound, placed a tube into somebody’s trachea (intubate) and provide an entire slew of medicine, mostly cardiac in nature, plus glucose IV (verses oral for the B). Paramedics (EMT-P, with P=paramedic) do all of that, plus greater, and greater drugs (i'm uncertain which, as i'm no longer a paramedic). EMT and EMT-I are the two semester long instructions each and each, and you will be able to desire to take them so as. THe paramedic course is barely available for those with an EMT-B or EMT-I, after which the classification is one 3 hundred and sixty 5 days long. (so, 3 semesters finished). THen the exciting starts, as you will might desire to place over 1000 hours in on a rig (ambulance) for medical with out pay, earlier you will be able to as properly be stated as a paramedic (yet another years properly worth of artwork, finished time, with out pay). once you're performed, you get say, $30K a 300 and sixty 5 days. So, I stated no thank you, and went to nursing college, the place minimum as a graduate, you're making $45k. So, my advice could be so which you will take the EMT B, and contact it an afternoon. no longer something is going to help you get into med college better than your grade factor known and your mCAT rankings. you will be able to correctly be a Nurse Practioner and not get into med college in the adventure that your grades suck.

I am an EMT in Western Washington (State).

My department paid for me to go to school, and paid to get the certification for me. As we are purely volunteer, I get paid a total of 6 dollars for every call I go on. But it is an adventure every time.
The class was 1,200 hours.

Good luck.

FireStation is a good place to start. If they don't certify, they'll know how you can be. EMT is a noble profession. Hope you make a good one.

I know in Florida an EMT only makes like 11.00 an hour, you may want to rethink your decision.
