It depends on what the cause of the problem is. If it is just a bladder infection, often a single course of antibiotics will clear it up. If it is due to crystals in the urine, often antibiotics, plus a special diet will be needed, and the diet is usually needed for life. If there is a blockage due to the crystals and the cat cannot urinate, this is an emergency and would require the vet to sedate the cat and clear out the urethra so the cat can urinate. If there is a bladder stone, which is fairly uncommon in cats, yes, this would require a surgery to remove and then special food to regulate. You need to contact your vet and see what's up. If this is the first time your cat has had urinary problems, your vet will likely run a urinalysis and send home a course of antibiotics. If it recurs, your vet will need to do a full urinary workup and consider special diets.

I'll say up front that there is debate on whether or not this works, but it has worked for me and my cat, so I'm suggesting it.
Go to a health food store and pick up a spray bottle of colloidal silver. Silver is supposed to be a natural antibiotic, I picked it up for a sinus infection and I use it for UTI's. I read that it was safe for animals too so I tried it when my cat got a UTI. One spray in the cats mouth twice a day for a week and the infection was gone. She hasn't had trouble since.
Please note that symptoms usually clear up within 2-3 days, I do a full week to make sure the infection is gone. If you don't see an improvement or symptoms get worse after 2 days please take your cat to a vet.

Lauren is correct. I would like to add that if the problem is crystals in the urine, left untreated, your cat will DIE within a very short period of time!!
I've had two cats that have died from that problem, one because we were ignorant and we had no vet within 300 miles and he died before we were able to make the trip. The other because we realized too late what was happening. ( I have a lot of cats, it's sometimes not easy to notice little symptoms when you're dealing with a crowd)
Get your cat to the vet immediately to find out what the problem is!

Have you taken the cat to the vet? If not do so IMMEDIATELY. If you cat cannot urinate properly he can become toxic and die.
The vet will likely use a catheter to empty the cats bladder, give IV meds and watch him overnight, you will then be given meds to give at home. The vet will likely recommend a prescription diet (My parents cat had chronic UTIs until they switch to prescription food and he hasn't had one in years)

Yes, there is an operation the vet can perform to relieve blockages. But you'll want to avoid that course, if you can. Take your kitty to the vet and see what he says. There may be a special food or water additive you can use.
Good luck!

Usually antibiotics are prescribed first. Unless it is a severly recurring problem I don't think that surgery would be warranted.
Some male cats get crystals really bad and require a "procedure" to help them urinate but that is pretty rare.
