Well few people remember it, but the war in Iraq was started because Saddam Hussein had nuclear weapons, which he didn't. So then it was because he was supporting Islamic terrorists, which he wasn't. So then it was because he had attacked his own people about ten or fifteen years ago, which is what he's currently on trial for. Some people, for whatever reason, think we are in Iraq because the 9/11 terrorists were Iraqi, which none of them were.
The best theory so far I've heard that to me explains what the hell is going on and why we went there and why we are still there, is that we went there to attract terrorists to come fight us, keeping them away from working on U.S. attacks. But instead, we ended up creating a lot of resistance fighters who aren't any more terrorists than the French Resistance or the Continental Army were. So even that half-baked reason didn't even play out. Then again, if the government calls or treats "insurgents" as terrorists, or lumps them together, then it looks like we've attracted more terrorists than we really have, because they know that most Americans think all Arabs are terrorists, and believe that we wouldn't go to war with someone unless they threatened us, so it doesn't really matter to most people whether we are fighting Al Qaeda or whether we are fighting people who just want their own country back instead of being run by a foreign military that doesn't even speak their language.
So now the reason we are in Iraq is because we want to introduce democracy to the Middle East, even though Isreal and Lebanon are already democracies in the Middle East. And we are failing on introducing an Iraq-wide democracy, and have even started considering "options other than democracy" as was reported by the New York Times in August. So, so much for the democracy thing.
No, the only reason we are still there is because the government keeps hoping that they can make something good i.e. pro-American or pro-conservative out of the horrible mess, instead of cutting their losses, or pulling back into a defensive posture as advocated by planforiraq.com.

Unfortunately the U.S has a habit of preemptive strikes which means that the first part of the question does not apply to this war. The U.S started this war WITHOUT any negotiations with U.N or anyone.
The War of Terror is really about domination of the Middle East for Israeli interests. With that also comes free oil for the U.S. Soon the Iraqis will have to use US firms for reconstruction with borrowed money from IMF and World Bank. Then in the future they have to pay the money back with interest (which goes to US) and thus future Iraq will be in debt forever with US earning money forever.
The U.S hopes to totally destabilize Middle East by causing a rift between Shiites and Sunnis. Unfortunately their secretly planted bombings of each others shrines have been working pretty good.
It also hopes to establish a PERMANENT military base to defend Israel while it goes about destroying Palestine. Thus pulling out now would not achieve these goals.

We're no longer combating it anymore. Our troops have pulled out of the towns, are STILL coaching the Iraqis and maintaining the borders at ease. Anyway the warfare has been over for years. What you might have been looking is a fiasco of an profession. A warfare is while you cross in. Kick the crap out of em. And get the hell out. And I do not feel we will ever recognize the truly intent the W management had their attractions on Iraq.

To show the might of the U.S military on the puppet of terrorism and not the source.Iran,China and Russia are the source but the U.S will not mess with them.Yeah sure they say the U.S has stealth and expensive gear and nukes but still even if you nuke Tehran and kill a bunch of people who had nothing o do with
the war the terrorists can still spread out. For the morons that say
"lets nuke Iraq and git it over with"!! It just can't work. The terrorists will still be there and spread out.But honestly
why show the military might on some untrained sectarians?
How aout Russia which is the weapons source. How about "nuke em and
git over with it"? The war on Iraq is just to show the U.S will not deal with terrorist countries dealing with WMD and yet
there are no WMD.Its like bullying. A bully will attack the weakest kid and say that he is strong and will not tolerate an opponent.
How about Iran,North Korea and Pakistan who might be giving
weapons to terrorists. How about Russia and China?

Personally I believe its all for Iraq. The US will make gains from Iraq’s democracy when all this is over. Iraq will make America first in line for its resources For the simple fact that America was the only ones will to help out their people. Most other countries turned their backs no Iraq and ignored their situation or plainly didn’t want it on their shoulders. I believe The President found a open door with 9/11 and took it. I think he knew it was risky under the circumstances. Tit For Tat. No matter what we gain or loose for it just remember he’s giving Iraq what America stands for. Freedom and Democracy

i think the original reason was oil .(my opinion)i mean since there were no weapons of mass destruction.but now the republicans think we have to stay because things have gotten so out of control the only way to get any kind of credibility back in the United States or anywhere else in the world for that matter is to clean up the mess .so the answer to your question would be.a win to them would be to straighten the whole thing out.i just don't know if they can and i don't believe the lives of so many are worth it.

You mean you didnt hear? Fox news knew that there were WMD's in Iraq so Bush declared war on Afganistan.... yea.... thats exactly how it happend..... but MISSION ACOMPLISHED!!!!!
Then we decided to take on the world of terrorism by ourselves, and have done a SMASH UP JOB!!!!!! Just as my friend who will never come home to us... he will tell you the same. Ask any marine what they are fighting for over there, and most will say like my friend who is home on leave.... "I dont know. I used to know, but I dont think that was right either".
It kinda feels good to be a sheep though... you get to follow around Bush and his quest for oil, I mean WMD's....

We are in Iraq to setup a outpost of democracy in the middle and so to prevent terrorist groups from accessing their resources. Pulling out now would result in the weakening the democracy being built which grant the terrorist imports from Iran the opening they need to tear Iraq down and rebuild it as a terrorist state.
We win by killing the terrorist groups that commit violence against civilians, there is no negotiating with someone who's starting point is your death and believe they gain great rewards by dying while kiling you.

Hopefully, the answer is to help a fledging semi-democracy get on its feet. The more democracies in the middle east, the better. Peace vs. Jihad.
