I have a cassette and I need to get the information off of it for a meeting. Problem is there is too much bass and there is a loud hiss. I can hardly hear the voices. I'm using a regular personal stereo system (RCA )to listen to it. Is there anything that I can do to lower the bass to hear the tape better? Special headphones or something? Any good help appreciated. I put the preset equalizer on Rock because it seems to be more vocal any other tips PLZ!

Your best solution would be to transfer to digital and use noise reduction software - bit over the top perhaps for your one-time use. If this is going to be a regular thing consider buying Magix Audio Cleaning software (quite reasonably priced). You will need cables to get the recording to play through the sound card of your PC (they may come free with the Magix software). This (and other freely available software) will be able to remove a lot of hiss and generally clean up your recording via easy steps.
If this sounds too complicated and the recording is really important, consider sending your tape to a studio who can do this for you - my mates at www.cassette2cd.co.uk would be delighted to do the job for a reasonable fee!
Last solution: find someone with a really first-class equaliser (and knows how to use it) and remake the tape with the top and bottom end muted, and the mid-range (vocal) boosted.
Hope this helps

Would probably turn down all the lower notes on the graphic equalizer, or record to computer and use noise reduction function. Not sure if standard windows recorder has that but WavePad on download.com has this function. Hard to say, really. If you have hard time hearing the unedited record, then just about any equipment will have an even harder time doing that too.
