well, I think it is possibly in poor taste to use a holiday tradition like Trick-or-Treating as an opportunity to spread ANY ideas, whether they be social, religious, political, or anything else. I think it depends on whether the issue is controversial or not, to a degree.
I guess you could pass out something that wasn't controversial, and be ok. My advice is that you attach the flyer in some way to the candy, so that the children, when they get home, realize that you didn't skimp out on candy!

Personally: I wouldn't. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. However, if it is an issue you feel strongly about, and you feel that the flyers will be read and that it won't result in irate parents or the egging of your house (or some other mischief) then I say go for it. But I don't think they will be read, and may result in egging, or irate parents. In which case you're just wasting paper and getting more than you bargined for.
So, do I think it's alright - yes. Should you? No. The kids aren't going to read them. They're there only for the candy.

You don't have to ask if you "should be allowed" to do this, because you already ARE allowed to do this. Freedom of speech already allows you to do so.
Being allowed to do something is one thing -- but it being appropriate to do it is another.
I would not pass out such flyers to trick-or-treaters. Not because I'm not allowed to do it, but because I don't think it's appropriate.
Kids get hit with messages by agenda-pushers in school, at home, on TV, and everywhere else.
Sometimes, they need a break from it and just need to "be kids" once in a while.
I think trick-or-treating is one such time.
If I were you, I'd just let the kids have fun and enjoy their Halloween night. We don't need to turn EVERY event into an opportunity to mold them, shape them, and turn them toward our own viewpoints and agenda.
Give them some down-time once in a while. Just once in a while, let them be kids.

Not really. Many people would be offended by this, just as I would be offended by someone who gave me a religious flyer instead of the treat.
How about placing the flyers in a container on a (temporary) shelf next to the door, where only those tall enough, thus old enough could take one if they so desired. You could call their attention to it if you wished, by saying, "If you are interested in having information about (name the cause), please take one home with you."
You may not pass out too many, but those who take one are more likely to actually read and consider it.

Hi wytchgyps:
In my opinion, no one should give out flyer's for Halloween.Children have very little left that lets them be children. From the time they enter school, the are called young adults. They are still kids who need dreams and fantasies to enjoy being a kid.
If someone is planning to hand out flyer's this Halloween, just turn off your lights and don't answer the door. Let the kids have this special day to be kids not propaganda peddlers.
Thanks

yeah that is cool that you want the kids and PARENTS to be aware what is happening in society today. That should be done more often, it would be cool even without the candy but the candy draws the eye of the kids and if you created a pouch with the issues on the outside and the issues on the inside that would ensure that they would be read more.

I think you should just pass out candy and leave your social issues out of Halloween. If you feel that committed to certain issues, then pass them out at a farmer's market or some other outdoor venue. Social issues and trick or treating DO NOT go hand in hand!

What social issue? Not that that really matters, I'm just curious.
But yeah, I think it's a little out of place, even though you probably mean well. Besides, the kids are only interested in candy... chances are they probably won't even read the thing.

No, I don't think you should. Most older kids have a thought about political and social issues! (I know I do!)
Not to mention, as said before, they would just trash it anyway and eat the candy. Save money on paper!

I think it is fine. Depends on what the social issue is. There is a fine line between awareness and protective information. Just think before you pass the flyer out. Is this something that you can be taken to court to over later. You may want to call your local neighborhood watch to see if its OK.
