I'm sorry if you are going through making this difficult decision. Euthanasia means "easy death" - the goal is a gentle and peaceful ending to your pet's life, often easing a great deal of suffering.

There are several different options you will likely have when it it time to euthanize your pet.

The first question will be if you plan to be present during the euthanasia. Some people want to say their goodbyes beforehand but not be there to see their animal die. Others want to be there to comfort their pet in it's final moments. This is a very personal choice, and it's yours to make.

The second question will be if you want to take your pet home to bury it or have it cremated. Usually, there are a couple of options: You can opt for a group cremation, which is less expensive, but you will not have your pet's ashes returned to you. With a private cremation, it is usually significantly more expensive, but your pet's remains will be returned to you. Cremation is probably never done at the vet clinic itself - an off site cremation service is used.

Most vet clinics have a catalog of urns or containers to choose from if you are interested. They probably will not offer to show it to you unless you ask (in my experience). Choosing to euthanize your pet is hard enough as it is - most won't pester you with details.

Losing one of your best friends is a very hard thing to go through, and it helps to be aware of your options before the time comes. It's very thoughtful that you are trying to do what's best for your animal.

My Justice has cancer and there is nothing any body can do for him. I have decided to have put to sleep by a vet...this is going to done of Friday. You can have your dog creamted I am and it will cost me $150.00 and get his ashes back. That is what they call a private creamtion. To have him creamted with other animals they said they would charge $30.00. I feel it is well worth the money to have him here with me. When my other dog (Peanut) died 4 years ago I also had her creamted at the time is cost $100.00. It would depend on which vet you used. Call around and ask I am sure they won't mind giving you the prices.

Try to find a vet that will come to your house so the Dog does not spend his last minutes scared. Usually the vet will then take away the body.

If your dog is sick or elderly and doesn't have a good quality of life any more, the most humane thing to do is take it to the vet or to an animal shelter to have it euthanized. They will give you the choice of allowing you to take the body home for a burial, or they will properly dispose of the remains for you.

Every vet charges differently and usually by size, call your local vet to see what the fee will be, the dog should be eamined by a DVM before it is put down anyway.

I have had my lost pets cremated.

Your local humane society as well as a local vet will have humane methods to put your dog to "sleep". They will dispose of the body as well for a price. It will vary from city to city so your best bet is to call them. Its based on size, or at least my local humane society is. You will be offered to stay with them while they take their last breathes as well if you choose.

Good luck and god bless, this is not the easiest decision to make.. Hugs to you both!

if you're going to put a dog down, then you should take it to the vet and they will humanely (spelling??) uthenize it. You can even hold your dog while they do it, if you'd like, it's just a shot, and is over quickly.

Take the dog to a vet and get a shot to put him/her to sleep.
Then leave the body at the vet and let them take care of it.

Don't do it yourself. That is ridiculous! This isn't Old Yeller.

If you really love your dog, call a vet and ask if they can come over to administer the shots. They will take the body away and cremate it.

Go to your vet. They'll do it for animals who are suffering. They also give you choices relating to the body: buried or cremated. If cremated, do you want the remains or do you want them to scatter them in a garden. I'm sorry about your pet.
