The immigration officer is correct, they will stamp your new passport when the old is produced.
However, as you probably know, renewing it in SA can be a problem sometimes it takes months and then you don't get the old one back.
What I did a few years ago was to return, get a new passport then take a trip out of the country. just a day trip to France will do.
Your new passport will be stamped and you won't have a problem.
To the guy that said go home the country is sinking I would say.
The country would sink without the skills of people from abroad.
I live in Fareham near Portsmouth and the hospitals are nursed by 80% Asian nurses.
The home that my mother in law is in the carers are either Asian or Zulu, yes Zulu. There are 9 Million British not working for one reason or another someone has to pay your benefits.
Anyway 40% of people in South Africa come from British parents
or Grandparents that were sent over there to fight the Boers. In the early 70's the conservatives changed the laws not allowing them citizenship though their grandfather or British father born outside of Britain.

The moment your passport is renewed, the old one becomes cancelled. However, if you renew your passport while your abroad, when you enter the UK on your new passport without a stamp, as long as you produce your old passport with the UK visa in it, the immigration officer will stamp your new passport so that your new passport will show proof of your UK immigration status. So its up to you how you want to do it.

Seems to me that you should be fine as long as you keep hold of your old passport to present along with the new one. Make sure they give it you back!!!!!

But why don't you check with your Embassy to be sure?

a friend of mine had his passport run out while he was in Australia working, he got in touch with the embassy there, and they sorted it out, not sure how but it was dealt with.
