NOOOOOOOOOO...What they do not tell you is that xanax not only effects your liver and kidneys, it is one of the top addicting medications you can take.
I was on xanax for 6 years. I got very sick and very suicidal (another lovely side affect).
I went to the ER and found out that both my kidneys and liver were in the danger zone.
Another very very important fact the doctors didn't share with me....You cannot be weened off this med. The fatality rate of coming off is higher than any other medication. They just cold turkey you off of it. It very very DANGEROUS to do but in my case, I had to make a life decision..Die then or go into kidney/liver shut-down.
My blood pressure bottomed out and I did feel like I was dying. My anxiety topped the charts. I wouldn't wish anyone to go through that.
I was horrified. They cannot give you anything until the xanax is out of your system. With me, it was 25 hours of hell!
I am now taking Clonazepam. It's a cousin of xanax. It's a family of anxiety medications.
Valium/Adivan/xanax/clonazapam...They haven't perfected many medications unfortunately but the studies show that Clonazapm is definitely the lesser of the evils.
I LOVE it. I don;t need it as often as I did the xanax. It's time released. I have been a sufferer of panic disorder since 1996.
I hope my babbling answer helps.
I just so try to make people understand that although xanax is a fast feeling med, so is Clonazapam without all the crazy side affects.
Good Luck,
~T~

I don't think you are permanently "screwed up". Medication is for people who have a chemical imbalance which causes the anxiety and depression. If you don't have a chemical imbalance then the drugs wont work, and perhaps could make it worse. Your depression is obviously from an experience that you've had or an environment in which you lived. It's a shame that your doctors didn't see that and now you are even worse than what you started. I would definitely talk to your doctor about weaning off of the meds and referring you to a therapist, which is the option for the depressed that isn't caused by chemical imbalance. I wish you the best of luck and hope you get better.

The best anti-anxiety medication I have taken is Klonopin. It is a long half life medication which means though it may not be as strong as xanax, it lasts longer in your system. Having said that I emphatically want to say that we all react differently to medications, from antidepressants, to blood pressure medicine to antifungal creams. The only way to really know the BEST is to see a doctor and try them until you find the one that works BEST for you.

The best self anxiety drug is life, and yourself. It's a tougher battle but the outcome is worth a lot more. Honest.
Good Luck

they are anti-depressants, but I hear a lot about Wellbutrin, and also Lexapro.

I've tried both, but not long enough to see long term effects.

Lex is immediate, and you can feel the chemicals actually relax you.

Well feels....smoother. You dont physically feel it as much as you do as Lex, but the results are better than Lex.

Unfortunately, they dont offer generic versions of these two, so you'll definetly pay for them, but you'll feel a lot better.............
