There are some books to read to start but Vodou is not a solitary practice. It must be done with a house. You can honor your ancestors and serve the lwa at home but you can not do it properly without first learning from a mambo or hougan. I started by reading but soon realized that every house practices differently. The only thing that remains the same is the priye ginen or prayer of africa.
If you trully want to learn and start practicing Vodou then you must first speak with your ancetors. They are first after God. Your first step would be to make an ancetor altar. Then once you are familiar with them, they have guided you to a house, and you have been working with that house for a while you would then be able to set up an altar for the lwa that work with you.
Here is the website for the house I belong to. Mambo Yves Zo wrote many articles on Vodou. The sosyete (house) is in PA by Philly. She offers classes for those interested but not wanting to join a house to learn. There are aritcles on the website. http://www.sosyetedumarche.com/Vodou_Info/vodou_info.html
Here is the website for Mambo Racine. Her house is in Haiti and she was the one that initiated my Mambo. She has a couple of Vodou lessons on her page. They explain how to get started with the ancestor altar. Scroll down to the lesson section. http://members.aol.com/racine125/index1.html#lessons
Now both houses do practice differently but they both offer some good information on how to get started. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
p.s. be careful about those that try to take all your money. once you are part of a house you should not be charged to recieved futher education. And there are charges for what they do. This is the only way that they would be able to support the house ad its members.

Why would you want to practice voodoo? That's bad black magic. Want to use a voodoo doll of someone you want to get revenge by putting pins in the doll? Forget about it. It's not safe. There's no best books on it. Really.

I don't think you can just learn it from a book.
