My 4 yr old was diagnosed as having Coeliac Disease and Type 1 Diabetes within 3 weeks of each other, 2 years ago!!
Was just wondering if anyone out there has a child with the same problems or with just either problem. How do you cope? Any one have a child who has gone through teens with these problems. Do they rebel and do they learn to eat properly and take care of themselves?
Just worrying about how my child will cope in the real world when she starts main stream school with peer pressure such a big problem!!

My cousin was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 2 also. She just learned to ea correctly growing up and when she was in middle school, she got an insulin pump. SHe was taught healthy habits from the beginning, so even when she rebelled, she didnt do any permanent damage, and she could feel the unhealthy effects. She turns 17 today and is in great health.

My heart goes out to you and your 4 year old. I have Celiac Disease (Intolerance of Gluten and most Grain), and Diabetes. However, I am 50. I was so sick, from the wrong medications I was given, I ended up in the hospital (6 months), with chemical burns all over my body and inner membranes. Burn unit treatment is torture, but necessary.
If your child is four, that is better than trying to change the habits of an adult. The child is still young enough to be influenced by you. You cope by taking responsibility for her health and life. She doesn't have anyone else.

The Celiac Disease is a lack of an enzyme in the body to break down Gluten and most grains. Many people with meditteranean heritage can have this.
Replace any breads, wheat gluten and grains with only Rice products.Canned Tuna contains wheat, read labels very carefully.
There are many canned products that contain wheat.

I can tolerate Rice and Rice products. I shop mostly in Asian markets. What type of Diabetes does she have? Ask your doctor if she has any natural insulin in her body? What kind of test did she have.?

Got a coeliac wife, shes like a kid sometimes. She was diagnosed about 9 months ago after years of symptoms / problems and misdiagnosis. She has changed her diet and is not a lot better. Things have improved drasticly on the food front, even in the short time she has known about it, and she can now get most foods 'normal' people eat, but made for coeliacs. Will gladly help with any further indepth info should you require it.

First get an introduction to coeliac uk form the childs specialist. You can get lots of foods on the NHS free - cakes, bread, biscuits, pizza base - pasta - the diet isn't too bad - but you will have to be careful because of the diabetes. Also warn him at Christmas not to even sip alcohol - and when he grows up - no alcohol and no smoking either. If he or she sticks to the diet they may be fine. But otherwise they will have loads of problems and peer pressure to eat normal food will be a problem. My email addy is on my website. I inherited coeliac too! I can give you a few tips to make the kid stick to his or her diet....
