I am going soon also and all reports I have read it seems OK just be careful check out the Gambia website. Do you know what the best currency is to take i.e. sterling euros or dollars.

Take Sterling. There are a few ATMs at tourist spots but they are prone to run out of money quite regularly. Be careful about using credit cards even with major hotels; there have been quite a few scams. Make sure you use the hotel safe facilities and only carry the minimum amount of money with you when you go out. On another note: DO make sure you take anti-malaria precautions (tablets, sprays etc) as the West African version of malaria is not very nice. Only drink water from bottles that have been presented to you with unbroken seals. In the Banjul area, one of my favourite restaurants is "Scala" run by a charming Danish lady. (No, I don't get any commission.) Enjoy

I've never been there but from what I have heard from my friends who have, some tips:

Don't bring anything valuable. Be prepared never to see it again.

Beware of pickpockets and scammers.

Always carry your passport and return ticket on you, if you leave it in the hotel room, it might get stolen with the rest of your stuff.

Sorry, this is all negative.
