I will be traveling at say 60MPH all of a sudden it sounds like it goes to two cylinders, slows right down to about 30 then fixes its self. Alternativley as it starts missing if I change down a gear its fine straight away, but then starts again in about two minutes. It also stops if I stop and start accelerating three times!??? What the hell is going on?

oh yes, I drive this van in London only and I have never noticed it. Had to go on the motorway the other day for the first time and that is the only place it does it.

The symptoms you describe sounds like either a sticking valve, or if it only happens at high revs it could be valve float. This is caused by weak valve springs, when the spring doesn't have time to close the valve properly before the cam is opening it again. This would apply to both petrol and diesel engines, try adding an engine clean additive to your fuel if this does not cure the problem and the problem is a valve related one, the cylinder head will need to come off for a overhaul. Best of luck with it.
