Cinnamon or cloves (or nutmeg or ginger) Depends on what you are making. I'd say cinnamon is the closet

Cardamom is what I'd call a warm spice like cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger. Spicy without being "hot". It is a seed pod from a tree which grows in tropical regions. While fairly expensive a little goes a long way. Better bakeries use it in their danishes and breakfast pastries. You might also find it in some Indian curry dishes. If you are cooking a savory dish substitute ginger or a pinch of nutmeg. Something sweeter Cinnamon will be fine. The dish will probably be fine w/out it .

Cardamon is used as a substitute for cinnamon in Danish pastries, cookies, cakes, breads and apple pie so maybe cinnamon will be a good substitute for cardamon

I was watching Rachael Ray last night, she was making an Indian influenced dish using cardamon. She said if you do not have cardamon you can use cinnamon.

I dont think there isa sub cuz cardamom has a unique flavour all on its own. but in a pinch you could use cinnamon cuz both have awarm and aromatic flavour. (thats in baking) but if you were cooking say chicken or some thing it wouldnt realy work out

cardamon is expensive! -- try allspice or a generic pumpkin pie spice mix.
