Ok guys, I've got a question. Say there's this girl at your school who likes u. U're considering going out with her. You're also popular. Now, would it matter if that girl was in the school's marching band, or not?

Could I point one thing out? I'm a girl! And I'm strait. I'm the one who's in band. Acutally, it's color guard, but it's still part of the band.

Nope it shouldn't matter. Don't let those high school "social" barriers/boundaries decide those kind of things. In time after its all over, its not going to matter whether someone was in a gosh darn marching band.

Wow, this is far more complicated than it might seem... I was a peer councilor in HS, and I had to deal with this kind of thing a lot, as the school I went to was very discrimatory toward various cliques.

Here's how I see it, though this is totally dependent on whether your school is "stereotypical" or not.

If you like someone, and they like you, then go for it and see what happens. Some people might make fun because of the "gap" in the social ladder between the two of you, but those people are the same ones that will be stuck acting like they are in high school for the next 20 years. Most people won't care.

Another thing to consider though is that, especially in high school, you don't know what other people might be expecting or wanting from you or the other person. I don't just mean socially... it is very possible that some other person may have a crush on one of you, and actually try to make life hard for one or both of you because of your choices.

Now, my personal philosophy when it comes to relationships is this: You really can't lose. In the long term, really, what's to lose by going out with someone. Even if you get your heart broken, you get over it eventually, and you learn from your experiences (hopefully). Even if people suck completely around you because you choose to date her, they'll get over it, or you will get over it, or both.. and after you're out of HS, it won't matter at all. High school is sort of the "proving grounds" for social interaction for the rest of your life. You either grow up and grow a pair (so to speak, heh) or you don't. Just remember that the vast majority of the time, when people are being harsh or cruel to someone else, it is because of their own insecurities. I hate that cliche, but it is fortunately, and unfortunately, very true.

Hope that helps.

That has way too many "depends on," Peanut.
For example, what if you're popular but stuck up?
What if, at your school, band is NOT cool, unlike my peeps at Woodland Park, Colo., who just took "Most Improved Band" honors in the recent state tourney?
Personally, marching band folk are cool with me, and if somebody is popular and DOESN'T think band is cool, then they aren't all that popular, are they?

no i had a friend when i was in school who was in the marching band and my group of friend were the cool kids. there's nothing wrong with the marching band. and if it is in your school. you will still be ok. if you cool you can use your popularity and make her cool too.

Well if I was in the situation you are descriping and it did matter to me that the girl was in the band then I would be pretty shallow and the girl could do better than me.

Why do you wanna go out with her?

What should really matter is if you like her and she likes you.

Go out with her, if your 'popular' friends dont approve, they weren't really your friends..
