I tried hooking it up like a VCR would but I might have done something wrong, anyway does anyone know how to do this the correct way?

Without knowing the details of each unit I can't give specific instructions, but in general:

DTV -----> DVD -----> TV

Much like a VCR like you said. You can use video/audio cables and/or RF cables. If using RF, you will have to tune your DVD recorder to whatever channel your DTV puts out, and tune the TV to whatever channel the DVD recorder puts out.

If the DVD is turned off then the TV will have to be tuned to the channel the DTV puts out, which may or may not be the same as the DVD. Confused?

After you've hooked it up, leave the DVD off and try to tune in the DTV with the TV. Once you get that working, turn the DVD on and try to tune in the DTV with the DVD and the DVD with the TV.
