Several times now police have threaten to ticket me or other friends who are dropping someone off in a No Parking zone. When we pointed out that we were Standing, not parking, they got irate and said that it was the same thing. I KNOW I took drivers ed a long time ago, but I was sure those were 3 different things - No Standing, No Sitting and No Parking. I have seen signs that say No Parking No Standing, when that's what was intended. THANKS!

No stopping means just that no stopping for any reason except emergency...no standing means you may only stop for the purpose of picking up or discharging passengers-no waiting...no parking means you may stop for discharging or picking up passengers or goods or may wait in vehicle to do either but can't leave the vehicle...explained another way -stopping is discharging/picking up passengers, standing is waiting for passengers or discharging/picking up packages..parking is leaving the vehcile unattended. One caveat is that a peace/police officer may order a driver to move if traffic conditions dictate it...so whether the sign says it or not, they can order you to move.

I am not sure what nation you are from, must not be the US.
So I am not sure of terms in other nations,

Here in the US, NO Parking means that a vechile can not remain non moving more than just a few moments.

Other terms sitting or standing are not part of any motor vechile code that I know of.

The officer assumes when y ou say that you are being a smart ....... and will treat you as such. If they say move you move or they may ticket you not only for parking there, but also for refusing thier lawful command

You are correct. The police officer was just mad because he didn't know the difference. Standing is when you are in the car. Parking would be if you got out and left the car there.

I think its Stopping, Standing, Parking. I didn't think Sitting existed.

But my understanding is:
- Stopping. You're in your car, engine running, you don't stay there long.
- Standing You're in your car, engine not necessarily running, you can move your vehicle at a moments notice
- Parking You leave your vehicle, obvioulsy engine not running if your smart.

cops were being butt-heads.
