Okay. First you need to open up the start menu at the bottom of your screen. Then you go to "Run"

And then in the little bar thing type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Then click on the tab on the top of that window called "Startup" Then unselect the programs you don't want, and select the ones you do. Be careful not to unselect important stuff like your anti-virus software or anything. So If you don't know what something is, you probably shouldn't mess with it. :)

Here's a nice little program that is much earier to use than
Start > Run > msconfig

Go to http://www.sysinternals.com and download their program call "Autoruns". Install it. During the install process it is easiest if you direct it to be installed in the C:\Program Files directory. It will be easy to find that way.

When you launch Autoruns is will open a window that will exhibit several tabs at the top. You only need to be concerned with the one marked "Logon".

Scroll down through the list and review the items. Once you have taken a look at the list, just uncheck the box (click on it) next to the program you don't want to launch at boot up of your PC.

WARNING: Leave things identified as published by Microsoft alone. You could shut off things you really need for XP and/or your PC to run properly.

You can reinstate the ones you turn off at any time by simply running Autoruns and then replacing the check mark and rebooting your PC. However, it is best to have only the necessary ".exe" files running. So e.g., things like Adobe Acrobat Reader quick launch shouldn't be booting up and running at XP start.

Hope this helps.

Either u can use third party utilities like system mechanic, Tuneup utilities..etc or u can use an inbuilt utility in XP called "msconfig". To use this just follow the steps,

1) Click Start -> run . And type "msconfig"(without "") and click enter.

2) Navigate to "startup" tab and deselect the programs which you dont want to startup at the begining.

3) Click Ok. When prompt restart your computer.

Cheers...!
