Why do people mistreat animals and talk about animals like they are just garbage?

Is it some kind of sick power trip? It makes me soooo angry.

Some do it because they (1) weren't taught any better and (2) you're right it is a power trip. Sometimes it's also greed: a cruel farmer can make more money by treating his farm animals poorly, neglecting their needs, penning them in cramped dark buildings, and then ship them on overloaded trucks.

You can make a difference. Don't be afriad to speak up when someone does something cruel. Don't be a part in hunting, especially "sport" hunting for fun. Don't eat meat, especially non-organic high-volume commercially produced meat. Adopt a homeless animal instead of buying one from a petshop. Be a good example and people can learn from you.

Every answer I see above mine, DITTO. Some people are so insecure and unhappy, perhaps abused themselves, that they have to take it out on anything that can't fight back. Too sad for them and the ones who can't push them off the end of the earth. Abuse, hate, disrespect, power trips, etc., are all signs of a weak individual with the potential to hurt you. Serial killers start out that way. I would hope no one is a lost cause, but if they treat the helpless in such a way, they are not allowed in my life, period. Not on my property, but maybe in my prayers. Such people are not safe to be around. OF course there is always the chance someone is just challenging you, but I wouldn't take that chance.

Its because to many people animals are property--something that is there solely for human benefit, for us to eat, use or abuse as we want. Some of it is because many uneducated people beleive that animals don't have feelings and thus it doesn't matter, sometimes it is a power trip, some of it is their belief that animals do not have souls, another is that most people consider themselves above the animal kingdom as a separate entity from that kingdom...there are many reasons for it... personally I think alot of it is from human cruelty--look back in history and see what have been done to both humans and animals.

I think people like that have little repect for the planet and the life on it, people included. I'm not a vegitarian. I eat meat and i know that animals have to die for that but i think there is a difference between killing an animal for food and senselessly torturing God's creatures for their own sick pleasure. It makes me mad too.

Some people just do not like animals and it could be how they were raised. Anyway I like dogs and birds, but don't like cats. But I don't mistreat them as long as they stay off of me.

I agree with all the answers above. I also work in animal rescue, and it is sad to see all the animals that go through our program (we're no-kill), knowing that they're there because of someone's stupidity and/or cruelty.

I work with animal control and I can't understand why people are mean to animals. They can't defend themselves very well and it reawlly angers me. Like the time a dog showed up with a homemade nueter job that cost alot to fix. Why did they even get the dog if they didn't want it

some people are just plain sick, avoid them because if they will abuse animals they will abuse you or anyone out there. that were serial killer come from.
