Marlin probably won't tell you how to take it apart, and I would not suggest it.
However, I do not go to a gunsmith, I do all my own work.
If you are bound and determined to do it, type "disassmbly Marlin 336 " on yahoo and spend a little time surfing. You will eventually find a site that shows you how to completely disassemble/reassemble the rifle, complete with color photos and maybe even video. Or, even better, pick up a copy of "The Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly/Disassembly : Part IV, Centerfire Rifles" It will tell you everything you need to know...

In response to the Oh Come On...
yeah, they do have to be cleaned, but complete disassembly is not recommended for any firearm, and most owners manuals do not tell you how to do so. It should be mentioned that with many companies, disassembly beyond what is recommended in the owner's manual will void the warranty. Now, if you get it back together properly, it isn't really an issue...Having worked on very few lever action rifles, I will not voice my my experience with disassembly of a lever action rifle, because, frankly, I've only done it once, and it was a winchester...innards are a little different. That being said, most people simply clean the bore and spray some oil in the reciever, and it works.
When I saw "take it apart" I automatically assumed you meant complete disassembly...that was an error on my part...

Oh come on! They have to be taken appart for cleaning.

Open the action until the lever is straight down, remove the screw through the pivot at the front of the trigger guard. The lever should now pull down and out, you can then remove the bolt from the back of the action.

If you want to do more than that check the Marlin site and look for a downloadable manual.

I suggest you do not refinish the stock at this time.

Call Marlin at Main Switchboard: (203) 239-5621
Gun Service (800) 544-8892 for a manual.
