Some cameras have a feature called image authentication. Nikon just added it to the firmware for the D200, for example. This is the only way to know for sure. (It's pretty important for police work, etc.)

If the retoucher has done their job properly then you wont be able to tell if any major comping has been done. Everyone is right to say for you to look at the edges of objects in the image. But, every single image that you see in a magazine or poster has had something done, from the smallest bit of colour correction to major skin work. If you get an image like this into Photoshop, then have a look at the Histogram (Levels), on an un-retouched image the graph should be like a smooth U shape (this means you have good blacks, a good mid range and clean whites). If it's been worked into then the graph will be all over the place with peaks where there shouldn't be!

There are many signs of a photoshopped image that you can look for.

1) Edges of an object look too sharp, blurry, or pixelated.
2) Shadows don't seem to be real.
3) Certain parts of the image look the same.
4) Lighting of an object doesn't match the rest of the picture.
5) Picture is very JPEG-like, if you know what I mean. If you don't, take a picture, save it on Paint as a JPEG. You'll see a bit of fuzz around, which is "JPEG-fuzz." Many people save their photoshopped images as low quality JPEGs so any imperfections will be masked by the fuzz.

If all else fails, just give the image to an artist, they'll probably be able to find lighting/shadow/edging imperfections in a snap.

Hope this helps!

if a proffessional alterened the photograph, then it should be very very difficult for the average person to tell the difference. sometimes the edges of an object look a little bit fuzzy, parts of the picture are not totally crystal clear, the lighting in different parts of the picture looks weird, it looks like something doesnt really belong in the picture...
