Please note the last two lines of the Chiquita Banana jingle:
"I'm Chiquita banana and I've come to say - Bananas have to ripen in a certain way- When they are fleck'd with brown and have a golden hue - Bananas taste the best and are best for you - You can put them in a salad - You can put them in a pie-aye - Any way you want to eat them - It's impossible to beat them - But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator - So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator."

We found that if they are still green keep them in the plastic bag and they will turn faster. Dont put them on top of the fridge, or in the fridge. If they turn brown they are the best for making banana bread lots of flavor. I wouldn't leave them out though because of fruit flies, you can put them in the freezer too for later use of banana bread. There is something you can buy to hang the bananas on but I can't remember what its called. If they are on the table that is fine too. Thinking about banana's makes me want banana bread....

The rule of thumb is "If it grows below the equator keep it out of the refrigerator". Most bananas are grown at or just below the equator. Putting them in the fridge will cause them to get brown faster. They need to be stored in a warm humid environment just like the environment where they are grown.

Actually if you do your research putting the bananas in the refrigerator doesn't hurt the fruit inside the peal at all. It slows down the ripening process significantly. Yes the peal turns brown but that doesn't mean the fruit is bad inside. instead of commenting on an opinion or hearsay, here is an actual site you can quote:

I have never heard of keeping bananas in the fridge. Keep them out of the sun, wherever you put them, and try to eat them before they become mushy. Do not overstock or you will be wasting them.

If you put them in the fridge they go brwon/black quicker so keep them out in a bowl. Put them in a bowl seperate to other fruit because banana's make the rest ripen quicker.

It depends on what stage of the ripening process they are in and at what stage you prefer to eat them. Good advice is on the chiquita.com website.
"To slow the ripening process once bananas reach your preferred ripeness, put them in the refrigerator. Even though our original jingle warned consumers not to refrigerate bananas, it's really OK. The skin may turn dark, but the fruit will be just right for several days. Back in 1944 when the "Chiquita Banana" jingle lyrics were written, consumers would typically bring home green bananas and put them in the refrigerator which kept them from ripening properly."

Refrigerating them will turn them brown real quick. Just leave them on a counter or bowl at room temperature. They are not unhealthy after their skin turns black. They are perfect for banana bread then!

I have placed bananas ,wrapped individually in reynolds foil ,in the fridge,

before eating them let them come back to room temperature.
