My son and I recently moved to London from the Caribbean, we have been here for about 4 years. I noticed that with the first winter our skin started to have bumps and become very rough...on closer inspection it looks as if the hairs on the skin are ingrown. It is not itchy but it is very unattractive and feels horrible, it happens only on our legs, outer and inner thighs. Help

its not just on black skin - im a 22 y/o white girl and get it on my arms sometimes.

the name for it is foliculitis - it is more common in afro caribbean skin as the hair has tighter curls.

exfoliating can help - and there is also a cream you can get from the doctor which is a mild acid - it stiprs the skin and allow the hairs to be free....

I come from Africa and used to have the same problem for a long time and used to quite ashamed of it. The solution is quite simple really - a decent multivitamin (I use Well Man). Apparently having a vitamin deficiency can make the problem worse.
My arms now are nice and smooth and wear my t-shirts with pride. Hope it helps!

might be hard water in britain, i'm from south africa, my skin became terribly dry a few weeks after i first got here. i came from a blistering summer to the core of winter in jan 2001...try using dove and use an exfoliating glove you can buy cheaply to slough off dead skin cells which accumulate. lots of moisturiser, oh, not just in black skin...i'm mixed race (though not black) and have a tanned complexion

its probably because you were so used to the heat in the Caribbean... that when you feel the cold your skin dries up and shrivels.. leaving it hard. try and put some cream on it or something

I have that same problem and I'm white. I guessed it was ingrown hair too. Maybe use a loofah, exfoliation cream etc?

not sure but it happens with white skin too. i've had that condition before and it seems to help when i keep lotion on it and hot steamy baths, so that the pores can open up.
