If you are interested in a certain breed: DO NOT go to a petstore! You will pay a lot more than you would through a breeder and you are not able to see the parents. At a breeder, you are usually able to see, at least, one of the parents and can get a better idea what to expect out of your new puppy. This also verifies that the baby isn't coming from a "puppy mill". Just because a puppy comes with papers doesn't mean the mom hasn't been over-bred and is free from defects Most good breeders will offer a better guaruntee than a pet store. Trust me... I worked at a mall petstore through high school- you wouldn't believe how sickly the puppies are and how much medications the untrained employees dose out. it is sad.

Personally, I love mix-breeds. It seems like they usually retain the most positive of each breed's characteristics. I have had two lab/ shepherd mixes and would get that mix again in a heart-beat. It can be quite difficult to predict how large a mix-breed will get but the other pros outweigh this con.

If you are worried about paying to much for a dog go to your local shelter. IF not definetely go to a pet store as the puppies already have shots and come with a warranty. So the price may be alot more than paying 30 dollars at the shelter to adopt a dog but it comes with somewhat insurance if it gets sick or anything.

If you are looking for a mixed breed, go to your local shelter. If wanting a purebred, go to www.akc.org & buy from a breeder that is a member of their breed's club, and that tests and certifies their breeding dogs free from genetic defects known to the breed - all breeds have some, good breeders test. This is the best way to ensure a healthy, well-adjusted pet right from the start. Plus, a good breeder will be happy to answer questions whenever they arise. Good luck!

Go to the pound. Rescuing a dog is always better than buying one. Just remember to keep going back if you don't see one that you like. So many animals get picked up everyday. I'm sure that you will find one in no time. Good luck.

From a breeder whos been breeding their dogs for awhile look in the newspaper, or if you'd like to give a dog a new home go to the shelter.

I've always gotten dogs from my local shelter, and I swear they are the smartest, nicest dogs ever. As long as you get them pretty young.

If you're looking for something pedigreed, than definatly a breeder would work.

Check out www.petfinder.com and you will find both pedigreed and not. Wonderful site!

Good luck!!

If you're not thinking of any particular breed, I would seek out a shelter or rescue group in your area. They have a great selection of dogs and puppies and make wonderful, grateful additions to the family! http://www.petfinder.com
