How does a oyster catcher bird open a white sand muscle with its beak?

I've seen many birds catch the shellfish and then find a hard surface to drop them on (piers, docks, walkways, etc.) in order to crack open the shell.

With there long beaks. Their beaks are hard and blunt and flatten so they can open oysters, clams, and muscles.
