When a man and a woman have reviewed each others health and genetic makeup (i.e. are attracted to each other) hormones are released in the brain that affect the behavior. These hormones cause sexual urges in the man and woman, and also have a bonding effect between the two. This bonding effect is called love.
The bonding occurs so that when the woman gets pregnant and the man must provide for her and his unborn child he does not skip out and leave the woman on their own.
After a few years, when the child is able to function more independently, the bonding effect of the hormones begins to wear off and the two individuals will likely find new mates to bond with.
So to answer your question, we love to help propagate our genes.

ITs in our nature. We need to love in order for others to love us back. We need to be loved so we can be happy and have a sense that we belong in this world. If we dont love, we are going to be sad individuals for the rest of our lives.
