Not all seats are sold at that price. that's the trick with low cost carriers. On some routes, some days and some hours you can find great deals.

The reason is that not all seats on the aircraft are sold at that price. Most airlines, even the budget ones, have a fares ladder which means they sell a certain number of seats at the lowest fare, a certain number at the highest fare, and then there are all sorts of prices in between.

The reason for this, as far as I know, is that airlines will never make a profit selling all the tickets at the lowest price (mainly because of the cost of fuel) but if they sold them all at the highest fare it would beyond a lot of people's means and the result would be that hardly anyone would use the airline. So they strike a happy medium by selling a mixture of fares.

Of course, the further in advance you book, the more likely you are to get a lower fare as most people will want to buy the cheapest ticket. Therefore, the later you leave it the greater the chance that you will be quoted some extortionate fare.

I work for an airline and I was once told that only 7% of the cost of each ticket is profit for the airline - the rest goes to paying for fuel, paying governments for landing rights, paying employees, providing catering on board, etc etc etc. I don't know how accurate this is or whether it applies to all airlines.

Something to do with aviation fuel not being taxed I think. Isn't that one of the things that the government is proposing to stop us burning a hole in the ozone layer?!
