My dog refuses to eat dry dog food. He is an eight month old Maltese. He will eat wet dog food and prefers table food, of course. But I think he needs the dry food too. Does it matter if he doesn't eat it?? I have bought EVERY brand out there and he refuses all of it.
Don't tell me to make him eat it by not feeding him anything else. I will not do that. I think that is cruel. It's like making a kid eat a veggie they hate. I just want to know if there is anything out there that actually tastes good to them and is healthy as well.

There is a product made by Merrick-called Grammy's Pot Pie, it is available in kibble form, I have yet to see a dog that hasn't liked it. You can purchase it in the smaller pet supply stores, it is not available in the chain pet supply stores. A note about changing food-please change over to the new food gradually- start with 1/3 of the new food to 2/3 of his regular food for 4 days, then go 1/2 of new food to 1/2 of old food for another 4 days, then go 2/3 new to 1/3 previous for another 4 days, then use the new food. Just watch that you change foods gradually, not all at once as this will cause him digestive upset/diarrhea. Good luck.

I feed and recommend the foods at http://www.frrco.com/121668 because of the high quality non-allergic formulas. Every dog I know that has tasted these foods have loved them.
Yes, feeding wet food and table food and not dry food matters. It accelerates tooth decay, usually is higher in sugars and other not good for dog ingredients.
You want something that does not list corn as a main ingredient, stay away from by-products, and foods with a lot of sugars, colors and preservatives.
You will most likely have to only put out the dry food and NOTHING else. The dog will choose the wet over dry, no matter what. You can purchase a gravy to pour onto the food, or slightly wet it with water, but in order to switch to dry you must totally take away the wet food.
They like the texture, taste, and smell of the wet food more than dry.

I haven't personally tried it, so I don't know about taste, but Inova is a great brand of dog food with a sticker price to match. Not carried by the major pet supply stores in my area either.
Try mixing the dry with the wet and over time, reduce the wet and increase the dry to see if that helps. Dry food is better for the teeth as well.

My cockapoo is very picky about his food too. We've always had to keep him on the same brand and style of food and he's never been able to eat canned food as it upsets his tummy. Anyway, he'll only eat the Purina Little Bites, doesn't like the big chunky dry foods at all. I think that it's good for his teeth and gums, keeping them healthy and strong. But if you make sure that your dog always has a chew bone and/or you brush his teeth regularly (they make chicken flavored toothpaste!) you probably won't have to worry too much about that anyway.

You can't make a dog eat what they don't like (like you said) for sure. If your dog can't eat dry dog food then don't force him. Have you tryed Bakers? I believe its the best around, even though it does tend to be quite expensive. Some of the chunks in it are meaty and not all hard. Good Luck

No matter what name brand you choose , you should look for the kind that had the highest percentage of protein in it .
My dog , when she was a puppy , I gave her dry food ( is good for their teeth too ) and mixed it with a little fresh boiled chicken .
A whole chicken is cheap and goes a long way .
I keep it in the fridge .
Try it your dog will love it .
No bones , no skin...of course

I know petsmart has always let customers return food if their pet doesn't like it. Buy small bags and see which one he likes and return them if he doesn't.
Be sure to keep him away fromtable scraps. Dog food is the best for them and people food will kill a smaller breed such as maltese much quicker than a german shepard. You will end up with ungodly vet bills from liver and kidney trouble and cry constantly because your precious baby has iv's and struggling to survive the night and 18 months old only becuase you chose to feed them table food because thats what they wanted.
Im sure you don't let your kids play in the pretty blue glass cleaner or run in the street. Don't give your dog something that could kill him.

My dogs love Diamond Naturals.They have Lamb and Rice,Chicken and Rice,Senior,etc. and it's well-priced.
