If it is a small breed dog, or if this is the dogs first litter, they can have only one pup. If a dog has only one, you should take mom to the vet to make sure one isn't stuck in the birth canal, or has a still born she didn't birth. If you don't and there are puppies still inside, you may lose mom.

Smaller breeds have smaller litters and older dogs have smaller litters. She should have had a vet check with puppy after birth to make sure there were no more inside. Every momma I have had the vets have felt for anything left behind.

Be sure to spay when the puppy is finished nursing

If a female was bred either too early or at the very end of her cycle, that can result in small litters. Also, if she's not in prime condition or is getting too old you can have smaller litters.
