This is serious... If, at any time you think you might hesitate to pull the trigger, a firearm is NOT for you. Protecting your family is a great responsibility and not having your husband to handle this puts more scare in the factor. If you have someone shining flashlights in your windows, the first thing is to call 911 NOW! and then, a call to the police to let them know that this is going on is also be a good idea. You can ask them to do drive by's several times a night and they will. What you can do to improve the safety of your family IS TO....Every night, make sure every window and door is locked, keep a phone by your bed and preset the other phones in the house and make sure that your kids that can, knows how to use 911 as well. putting extra window locks for under 10 bucks goes a long way. they also have a very cheap door alarm that when opened, it pulls a connection apart and sounds an alarm that everyone, even your neighbors will here which isn't a bad idea. Sharing this problem with your neigbors is a very good thing so everyone can watch for each other. Last, a can of Pepper spray or (my choise for your issue), a stun gun or tazzer is legal and will stop your attacker long enough for you to remove the family out of harms way. Last, make a fire drill plan where every one knows where to meet outside when there's a fire or even an attacker. HAVING A PLAN !!! gives you the edge in an emgency. best of luck, be safe.

If it is happening at a certain time call the police in advance so they can have someone close by to swing into the are at the right time to catch who ever it is or have your husband leave at the time he normally does and park his car somewhere close enough so he can walk back and try to catch who ever it is.... Or try a video surveillance system with night vision so you can catch the person on video to give to the police, Also get a big loud dog like a German Shepperd or a Doberman something big with a loud and mean sounding bark not necessarily a mean dog but protective the biggest thing you need to do is get the police involved for your family's safety.....Oh and DONT KEEP a WEAPON under your pillow if the prowler breaks in he could get it away from you and use it on you or your kids and we dont want that to happen make sure you lock your house up tight and turn on all your light as well use lighting that is triggered by motion if you are concerned about runing up your electric bill

A dog, pref. a non-neutered German shepherd, doberman, rotweiler... SPCA's will not let you have an un-neutered dog, and may only give you one for "companionship," and not working purposes. If you can't manage a big dog with the bad habits of non-neutered dogs, Jack Russels and other terriers have a lot of courage. You might have the best of luck looking in the classifieds for crossbred puppies with the right characteristics.

Tasers can also be good.

A baby monitor outside can offer some early warning. I listen to it with a police scanner and an external speaker. You can hear whispers from sixty feet away when it's quiet.

Close shades and blinds as soon as it becomes darker outside than inside.

Cell phones -- even ones that are expired and out of minutes -- are capable of dialing 9-1-1. Keep a couple of those charged up and ready to go. Prowlers can't interfere with those like they can cut a land line.

Exercise with boxing gloves, a sandbag and a speedbag if you want to be strong enough to hurt a man without a weapon.

Have you called the police and reported the incidents? You should. Also, I'd go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a couple really good motion lights. These are spot lights that go on when there is motion under them. You can have your husband mount them on the roof or above any door or window up high. When this prowler comes around, the big bright light will shine on him and, at the very least, you can get a good description of him/her so you can report that to the police. If you like dogs, get a big one. Good luck.

Call the police when you see the flashlight in your windows or hear someone in your yard. Have you told your husband about this? Get yourself some mace and a stun gun. Above all please please please report the incidents to your local police station as soon as possible. It's there job to carry the guns.

You and your neighbors should organize a block watch as well. That will cut down on people lurking in the neighborhood. You may want to consider getting a dog too. Whomever is prowling around your house knows your daily routine; that your husband works at night and that you are home alone with two small children.

Get a big dog. Prowlers hate dogs. Did you call the police when this happened? Keep your outside lights on all night. If you don't have any have your husband install some. Also keep all your doors and windows locked and window shades closed at night. When in doubt do call the police that's what they are for. Be careful and good luck

No one sticks together any more. Prowler problem has got worse out in our country neighborhood. Calling cops is a waist of precious time, when seconds count. When there is more than one person involved due to multiple shoe prints, and they have gone to the extent of cutting and bending fence back to make path ways, jiggling door knobs, banging on windows, slashing tires..and poisoning dogs...some thing has to be done about it...time to lock and load, place no trespassing visuals out...stake the property out with a few guys or gals with gutts and not afraid of night fall...some times you cant depend on the neighbors cause they might be the dam prowler. It has been the case many of the times. But no matter. Thief, murderer, prankster, gona come to an end.

express your concern to your husband and let him know you are afraid for your safety and the safety of the boys. Hopefully you have a good security system hooked up. Be sure you have your phone on hand and maybe a can of mase as well. Be sure to keep it out of reach of the boys though. If you dont have mase handy you can always use a can of hair spray, it does the same thing. Call your husband at work and let him know what's going on and call a a friend to come over and sit with you untill your husband get home or atleast untill you feel comfortable enough to stay home alone.

If all else fails, dial 9 1 1 .

Of course, call the police so that there's a record so that in case you need a restraining order; that you're good to go. Here's a true story. I was 14 at the time-- My older sister had 3 kids ranging from 2 yr - 8 yr old. She had a stalker who was threatening her; she did the police; got a restraining order; He was still stalking and the police didn't care about her situation--they couldn't respond when he wasn't there. The guy got to the point where he was threatening the kids. One night he pulled up to the house and she threw her purse into his windsheild; and punched him through his door window...he drove away never to be seen again (my sister is 5'1 and 120 lbs). My husband is pretty scared of her.

Get a big dog. Ask the police to make some patrols in your area. Call them when the prowler is there.
