Even before the coup they were changing the visa laws, so it is best to go to the Thai Consulate, and get a 3 month visa,,, if your going to work here don't mention that to them and make sure you have plenty of money beers here are not as cheap as they used to be in the bars.

Yes, you can go to the Thai Embassy in the UK and request a 60 visitors visa, then renew the visa for additional month when the time comes. Else you can go to Thailand and receive an automatic 30 visitors' visa and renew twice. My thinking would be to do it in advance with the 60 day visa and worry about the 3 month.

That would mean leaving around the middle of December or later and then returning in March. I think it is a good plan. And of course you would need a passport.

The standard visa is 60 days. If you want to stay longer - you take a bus to Cambodia and get your passport stamped there - then re-enter to Thailand for another 60 days. There are many services in Bangkok and Pattaya that offer this service.

The easiest way to get your visa is to do it by post through the Hull Thai Consulate. They seem to understan more and communicate better than any other consulate. They make it easy for you to get a non-immigrant visa, which is valid for three months, and that can be extended in Thailand for either one or two months.

You can see the Thai Consulate - Hull web page at http://www.thaiconsul-uk.com/

The Immigration laws are being tinkered with as we speak. Go to the UK Thai embassy and they can set you straight. Hawaiian shirts are always fine here. No paperwork required.

Get a few yellow shirts to honor the King when you are here too. You will manage with immigration somehow, everyone finds their way. Great choice.

Yes. Get your passport done. Get a visa. And should you be trying for Hawaii instead?
