Think of all the scars you will have. Someday when you grow out of the teenage depression stage and want to move on with life and find a guy and get married and go on a honeymoon someplace warm, how will you wear a bikini with scars all over! I worked in a hospital and saw a girl who did this to herself, I just wanted to ask her why would you hurt yourself? If it is over a boy, well there are millions out there and when you are young it may seem to be the end of the world, but it is not. Also think of when you are a mom, how will you explain to your children what you foolishly did to yourself as a teenager? Find another way to express the feelings you have when you feel the need to cut, try running until you feel like you will fall over or screaming into a pillow, or writing down your feelings. I hope you can sort this out, cause you cannot take back what you are doing to your body and the scars will remain forever!

Cutting in the "unspoken" symptom of many disorders, from anxiety and depression to borderline personality disorders. For this reason it is not as understood as a lot of other symptoms; and, its NOT just a teenage thing. The two most common thoughts are...people cut because the physical pain helps them shut out the emotional pain...and people cut because they need the attention (I do not agree with this one as most of the cutters I have worked with "hid" their cutting). Two things that have seemed to help are...acknowledging the cutting and talking openly about it...and as someone else suggested, replacing cutting with a positive obsession that is not harmful.

I can understand your not wanting to tell your parents, but its likely they will find out or guess sooner or later. You really need help to stop it more than can be given here, though I commend the good suggestions you have been given.

I've never done it myself, but I have friends who used to. Basically replace cutting with something better like music or sketching or screaming into a pillow. Anything that gets out your feelings except or anything addicting(drugs achohol)for that because you could injure yourself even more and make the situation worse.
I know you don't want to tell your parents or get a doctor, but if the situation gets worse you may have to. Cutting is dangerous and could even cost you your life.

It's great that you want to help yourself, it takes strength to admit that. This website has lots of links and phone numbers: http://www.teenadviceonline.org/gethelp/numbers.html.

I would call the National Mental Health Association: 1- 800-969-6642 to start, but I hope you can also find a friend, counselor or someone you know who will support you as well.

Good luck!

I know I had struggled with cutting for a while and what helped me... was getting people who knew about it and having them just know and like explaining to them when it was I would feel the need to do it helped me to not do it that much.... that and getting support from my church but I've heard that other things work for other people.... like running, rubber bands, music etc. I hope I have been able to help you and I wish you the best.
