If this is for real the rim of a glass is the top where you sip or drink

I hope you are referring to rim in terms of cocktails. To add a salt or sugar rim to a glass, take a slice of lemon or lime and place on the glass as you would to garnish. Run it along the edge of the glass. Get a small dish or plastic container (good cause you can reuse) and add 1/2-3/4 inch of salt or sugar. Place the glass upside down in the dish or container allowing the salt or sugar to form a nice encrusted edge or a rim. Gently tap the glass over the dish or container to remove any excess. Now you have a prepared glass with a rim to which you can pour your cocktail from the shaker.
