Yes, you are awake. No it does not hurt because they use drops so you do not feel anything. They also put a device on your eye to keep you from blinking.
The reason that they do not put you to sleep is because you may go into REM (rapid eye movement) and your eye would involuntarily move.

Yes you are awake during laser eye surgery. There is an instrument called a speculum that keeps the eye open and keeps it from blinking. You don't feel a thing...topical numbing drops are put in prior to surgery (they last 15 mins) and continued during the surgery to make sure it is definitely numb. The surgery takes 5-7 mins for both eyes, the laser treatment per eye is approximately 20-30 seconds per eye. The rest of the time includes getting the patient situated and explaining to the patient what is going to happen during the surgery as well as the cutting of the flap which is about 10 secs.

Yes you are awake during laser eye surgery. I had Lasik performed this summer, and it was the best decision I have ever made. No, the surgery did not hurt, although it can be minorly uncomfortable at times. They use a clip that keeps your eyelids open, so you will not be able to blink. The procedure was quick, and I only had mild pain afterwards that was easily relieved with Tylenol. Alot of people I have spoken with are afraid of the procedure, but it is not in any way as bad as it would seem. There is a strong odor while the laser is operating, and the clip they used to open one of my eyes pinched a little, but other than that it was a fast, easy and virtually painless procedure. I have worn glasses and contacts most of my life, and now I have better than 20/20 vision. I would strongly recommend this procedure if you are serious about having it.

Yes, you are awake, then clamp your eyelids in a fixed position so you can't blink, and the anesthetize your eyeball, so you don't feel anything.

they put a speculum in your eye which holds the eyeball in place and the lid open. It doesn't hurt at all because they give you a local anesthetic.

They use clamps to keep the eyelids open. I thought they put you out for lasic surgery.
