No, the pH of human shampoo is not right for dogs and can lead to dry skin and dandruff is used for a long time. If you have nothing else on hand, baby shampoo will work for a 'quick-fix' but I wouldn't recommend using that only.
The best shampoos are sold by vets, groomers and possibly feedstores. Shampoos like Hartz and Sargent's are usually cheap, but I've seen so many skin/allergy problems w/these.
It's best to use a high quality dog shampoo (like Hy-Lyt) if you can.

I have read all the hype, and thought that only dog shampoo would be appropriate.. However, after reading a post on vetinfo.com I realized that it is just that HYPE to sell LOTS of product! I have been using good quality human shampoos on my extremely longhaired , large dogs,, and all are well, coats are lovely, and I can see no difference myself..the breed that i raise are very sensitive to most chemicals and unnatural things, and they do just fine using human shampoos, detanlgers, conditioners and such..I even use a human hair brush for normal brushing, and only pull out the big guns for tough jobs..
Anyway, Dr. Mike, DVM, stated that a study was done, comparing dog shampoo to human shampoo, and there is no 'balance' that would make any difference..To get best results from either..rinse well..
I don't know about others, but I am tired of being manipulated by advertising hype! >> http://www.vetinfo.com/dhair.html#Shampoo%20for%20dogs
Those gullible enough to believe such ad campaigns, would also believe that Purina, Pedigree, or Come n Get it..are suitable kibbles for our dogs! .. and then pay through the nose for chemo therapy that could have been avoided by feeding a quality dog food..

Human and dog shampoos (and skins) have different pH levels. While it won't kill the dog to use it once, it WILL dry out the skin big time - and it can cause problems if used a lot. If they decide to use it, then have them dilute it - a little bit of the shampoo to a LOT of water, mixed in a bucket. Or you can just go out and buy the proper type of shampoo for the dog.

I wash my dog with human shampoo and conditoner and have never had a problem. My rationale, though probably flawed, is that they probably test them on animals anyway. I never had an issue with dry skin, etc. (though i dont bathe her that often) but maybe if you dog has sensitive skin it could make them a little itchy. I would go ahead and try it, its not going to be the end of the world if they get dry sking just dont do it again. Ive looked athe ingredients in the two though and there sint much difference. My guess is they try to make people think this so you spend more money on their pet specific shampoo. Most likely itll be fine.

Do not use baby shampoo or any type of human shampoo on your dog. It damages the texture of their fur. It washes out the oils in the fur. It makes them itch and it irritates their skin.
Purchase a good dog shampoo at the pet store. It's worth the price for your dog's well being. When he/she is irritated by shampoo they don't feel well and it does not make for a happy dog.

According to what I have read, it rinses away too much of a dog's natural skin oils. Pet shampoo is somewhere off the human scale of "for normal to dry hair."

Human shampoo can contain perfumes that will irritate your pets skin. In case of an emergency then ok, but don't make a habit out of using it. Best to use a shampoo for dogs.
